Corno del Renon (Rittner Horn) Ski Area

A relaxing winter holiday at Corno del Renon Mountain

The ski area at Corno del Renon Mountain, situated about the province capital of Bolzano (Bozen), is one of the most beautiful sunny plateaus in the Alps. This ski area is very popular with holidaymakers, especially families, and offers a very special experience of winter.

Whether you want to ski, take a winter hike, go sledding, or do some cross-country skiing, one thing is certain: you’ll be stunned by the far-reaching views of the extraordinary Dolomites you’ll find atop the sun-kissed Renon (Ritten) Plateau. Located in southern South Tyrol, Corno del Renon Ski Area is so popular because of its mild temperatures, wide runs, and numerous ski lodges with sun terraces that serve up traditional, high-quality local cuisine.

Renon Plateau offers an old-world experience of nature - yet is reachable from the city of Bolzano in just a few minutes on a cable car. From there, an 8-seater gondola lift whisks visitors up to Cima del Lago Nero (Schwarzseespitze) Peak, atop the Renon Plateau, which offers a 360-degree panorama of South Tyrol’s Alps. The idyllic mountain villages above the province capital transform the panoramic mountain into an attractive destination for anyone who wants to experience winter in South Tyrol just like in the old days. Those who want to approach the end of the day in an even more sporty way may opt to descend all the way down into the valley on a sled.

An international centre for the ice skating, Renon offers three wonderful options for skaters: Renon Ice Rink is very popular with the very ambitious, Renon Arena is ideal for the little ones, and nature lovers will love gliding across the ice at Costalovara (Wolfgrubener See) Lake.

The Renon Arena and Renon Ice Rink
In Collalbo sul Renon (Klobenstein am Ritten), there is 400-metre speed skating ring that regularly hosts international events such as the European Speed Skating Championships. Its optimal elevation makes Renon Ice Rink one of the fastest outdoor tracks in the world; as a result, it is widely used as a training track for a great number of national and international speed skaters.

The ice stadium at the Renon Arena accommodates 1,200 spectators and offers ideal conditions for ice hockey, short track and curling. Serie A hockey games, short-track events and curling competitions are held here throughout the year. On weekends, the Renon Arena is open to the public, when the programme includes Skating with Music.

Costalovara Lake is a highlight for nature lovers: the small natural lake freezes over from the early December to early March, and is an ideal spot for romantic skating immersed in nature.

The sunny plateau above the city of Bolzano is known primarily for its mild temperatures, numerous sunshine hours, and panoramic views of the Dolomites. Located an elevation of 2,260 metres, it has no peaks to obstruct views of the fabled Dolomites and the icy giants of the main Alpine ridge. More than 20 kilometres of marked scenic trails crossing the plateau at the disposal of winter hikers. A good number of these winter hiking trails are quite stroller-friendly and are thus well suited to a laid-back outing with the whole family. Renon Cable Car, a narrow-gauge railway, and a bus all run directly to Pemmern, as far as the valley station of the cable car. From there, a modern 8-person cable car goes up to Schwarzseespitze Peak. The summit station of the cable car is the starting point for many wonderful hikes – such as along the panoramic trails, the Rosswagen Circuit or the Winter Premium Trail. Anyone who loves winter will love the RittenCard, which includes free use of all these various modes of transportation.

    Italy's First Winter Premium Trail
This hike starts at the summit station at Schwarzseespitze Peak and leads up to Corno del Renon (Rittner Horn); from there, it goes back down to Scharzseespitze Peak via Corno di Sotto (Unterhorn). With an altitude differential of 340 metres, the hike is relatively easy and takes about 2 ½ hours. Spectacular panoramic views of the Dolomite Mountains are an ample reward for the effort required.

Corno del Renon, affectionately known as Loge of the Dolomites, is located above Bolzano (Bozen) and is the sunniest plateau in the Ortler Ski Arena. The plateau itself has an elevation of 2,260 metres and offers unobstructed views of the Dolomites. There is likewise no obstacle to the north to obscure views of myriad mountain peaks, including the glaciers of the main Alpine ridge, where Ötzi the Iceman was found. Corno del Renon has thus been a winter destination and holiday resort beloved by tourists and locals alike since the advent of Alpine mountaineering and the popularity of Sommerfrische, or “the summer retreat”. The combination of idyllic mountain villages and convenience to the capital city of Bolzano, with its rich cultural diversity, makes Renon one of the most attractive ski areas near town.
