Monte Cavallo (Rosskopf) Ski Area

A recreational mountain with a 10-km sledding trail

Monte Cavallo Ski Area, near Vipiteno (Sterzing), offers winter fun for the whole family, without long queues, and the longest illuminated sledding trail in Italy. From the moment of arrival on Vipiteno’s Sun Terrace, visitors enjoy spectacular panoramic views that reach all the way to the Dolomites.

The expansive Monte Cavallo Ski Area is located just five minutes on foot from the centre of Vipiteno, which was a trading town in the Middle Ages. The valley station of the cable car is reachable in just a few minutes from the parking area near the pedestrian zone. Monte Cavallo Ski Area has 20 km of perfectly groomed ski slopes and a highly regarded ski school, with nursery slopes. The ski area thus provides safety, comfort and fun for the whole family. The 10-km floodlit sledding trail is very popular with people of all ages: in 2011, international ADAC tests singled it out as the best sledding trail in German-speaking Europe.

At the Monte Cavallo ski area in Vipiteno, some important steps have been taken in recent years towards the future and modernization. The new panorama lift consists of a mixture of 6-seater chairs and 8-seater cabins, the new downhill run almost reaches down to the old town of Sterzing, both offer an even more exciting mountain experience.

Monte Cavallo offers ideal conditions for snowshoeing and winter hiking. The pageant of nature found at Monte Cavallo is best experienced at a natural pace: walking speed. The effort is well rewarded. At the far reaches of Monte Cavallo, winter hikers will find the tranquillity of a snowy landscape, pristine countryside, and spectacular views of some of South Tyrol’s most beautiful rock formations.

Show off the beauty of nature at its best. The striking triumvirate of peaks known as the Tribulauns soar majestically into the heavens and the jagged dolomitic rock formations of the Odle Massif greet hikers from afar, in the southern reaches of Val di Funes (Villnösstal) Valley.

The ski and recreational area of Monte Cavallo and the town of Vipiteno (Sterzing): where else do you find winter sports and the pleasures of town so close together? The historical Vipiteno old town is accessible on foot, just five minutes from the valley station of the Monte Cavallo gondola lift.

Known as Fugger City for its relationship with the historical banking family, Vipiteno was formerly a trading centre for spices and silver ore from the south. The town is delightful, with magnificent mansions and medieval squares, beautiful shopping streets, wine bars, and traditional inns.

Running 10 kilometres in length, the sled run at the ski area of Monte Cavallo (Rosskopf) is the longest in Italy. The run leads from the mountain station of the ski area down to the city of Vipiteno (Sterzing) and is accessible via gondola lift in about 15 minutes. Here, sledding fun is guaranteed into the spring thanks to snowmaking equipment.

The best finish to a good sledding party is a side trip into the centre of Vipiteno: you can cap off the evening right with friends or family at one of the city’s traditional restaurants.

On Saturdays, sledding enthusiasts can ride the gondola lift to the starting point of the run, in the recreational area of Monte Cavallo, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. On these days, the sledding trail is illuminated with floodlights until midnight. You can rent sleds at the valley station or at your hotel’s ski rental desk; a day pass for Monte Cavallo remains valid throughout the evening.
