Skiing in Open Terrain and Deep Snow

Freeride snowboarders, backcountry skiers, and off-piste skiers all seek one thing: going through pristine powder snow far removed from the marked runs. Powder snow, spectacular freeriding, and snow late into spring make Ortler Ski Arena an unforgettable adventure for freeriders. The best options for freeriders tend to be concentrated in the two glacial ski areas of Val Senals and Solda, nestled amidst the unique landscape of Stelvio National Park and the Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park.

For a safe freeriding experience, good knowledge of the landscape and awareness of snow conditions are of critical importance.

    A variety of wide and challenging slopes and ideal conditions for adventures in the deep snow: the ski area at Val Senales is ideal for anyone who loves freeriding.

    Tip: We highly recommend that you allow one of the experienced ski guides, who know the area very well, to take you on a freeride tour. The instructors at Val Senales Ski & Snowboard School are very familiar with the pristine slopes here, and can give you expert advice backed up by a lot of experience. There are freeriding courses available as well.

    Information for Deep-Snow Courses
    Course Days: Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
    Cost: € 228.00 (without equipment)
    Rental: € 28.00 for a backpack kit (backpack with shovel, sonde, and avalanche beacon, only during class hours, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.)
    Minimum Participants: at least 3 people

    With 25 km of slopes at about 1,100 meters in altitude and fabulous snow conditions well into spring, Schwemmalm is very popular with skiers of all ages. Asmolpiste is a real challenge, with some very steep sections: the run leads from the summit station at Muteck (2,625 m) to the valley station (1,500 m) of the Larcherberg lift. Freeriders and deep-snow skiers can expect to find plenty of powdery firn snow awaiting them off the pistes all the way into spring – not to mention the pristine nature of Val d’Ultimo (Ultental). The high peaks and steep slopes of the Ortler Massif are an invitation to explore.
